The first suspected case of Chinese coronavirus has been identified in Canada, Ontario officials announced on Saturday.
The case was listed in Toronto.
According to the province’s deputy chief medical officer of health, Barbara Yaffe, he is believed to be a 50-year-old individual who lived in Wuhan, China, where the epicenter of the epidemic is located. He became ill quickly, showing symptoms related to the coronavirus. The man is hospitalized in a Toronto hospital and placed in segregation.
The first results of the laboratory were transmitted to the authorities on Saturday afternoon.
Provincial medical officer of health David Williams wanted to be reassuring that the risk for Ontarians of contracting the virus was low.
All around the planet, public health services are trying to fight against this new virus originating from China, but which has also been detected in Europe, Australia and North America.
More than 1,300 cases have been identified, including three in France and two in the United States.
The death toll from the coronavirus rose to 54 on Saturday and Chinese authorities said they had identified 300 new cases. Despite this, the World Health Organization (WHO) has yet to raise a global health alert.
On Friday, Quebec’s national director of public health, Horacio Arruda, said that there have been no reported cases of anyone having contracted coronavirus in the province.
