We still have to wait a year for the Barbiemovie with live actors, but the makers have already shared photos of what lead actors Ryan Gosling (Ken) and Margot Robbie (Barbie) will look like in the film. And that triggers something on social media.

The way he looks now that he’s got to play Ken, you haven’t seen Ryan Gosling before. Bleached hair, brightly tanned and with impressive abs under his open denim jacket. His name is written on his underwear and he is wearing jeans.

We also got to see Margot Robbie, Barbie in the film, at the end of April. With typical hairband and blue-white striped suit and driving a pink convertible.

The photo of Gosling as Ken has caused quite a few reactions on social media. First of all with his fans. Opinions are very divided about his new – temporary – appearance. “How can they make someone so handsome even prettier”, writes one. Or: “Ryan Gosling as Ken should hurt my feelings.” But others don’t have it with the very stereotypical look. “Why does Ryan Gosling look like a Russian spy in an 80s family comedy with Steve Martin as a divorced father,” one person wrote.

But even more than Gosling’s look, it’s about the movie and what little we know about it. Nothing is known yet about the story that will be told. And that worries people. They fear that we will get a very cliché script, in which the not too smart blond Barbie falls in love with Ken’s muscles. “Please prove to us that in 2022 you can write this story with enough content,” it sounds, among other things.

Of Barbiemovie hits theaters on July 21, 2023.
