First major update PS5 adds option to save games to external storage – Gaming – News

The PS5 (and also the Xbox Series S | X) and on the PC using DX12 and some other developments are being worked on. Think about:
– hardware that ensures that extremely compressed files can be used super fast
– due to the speed of SSDs, many files no longer have to be ‘double’ on a hard disk (this happened regularly to improve loading times)
– much more bandwidth between the storage and the CPU / GPU / Memory to be able to load more data in addition to fast

The disadvantage is that many modern game engines do not yet directly use all these functionalities, all that development takes time. And as long as there are also computers with slow 5400RPM hard drives, many games will have to take this into account and therefore limit the technical ambitions.

But your example is otherwise correct and is where it is slowly going; storage can actually be considered as a somewhat slower type of memory to be able to read out data very quickly; and that data is being made more and more efficient in order to limit the space that is needed.

I just don’t think you have to do it with ‘downloads’ because if you don’t have a connection (or your connection is too slow) things will go wrong.
