First intranasal vaccine against Covid in Cuba will request authorization shortly

EFE.- The producers of the first Cuban intranasal vaccine against Covid-19 will ask the national health authority “in the coming weeks” for authorization for its emergency use “as a booster dose,” the official newspaper reported Thursday. Granma.

The vaccine candidate Mambisa, developed by the state Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), has, according to its manufacturers, the advantages of not having to be injected and of blocking SARS-CoV2 through its main gateway into the body, the nose.

The authorization to the Center for the State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices (CECMED) of Cuba will be requested once the clinical trials of Mambisa, the potential fourth Cuban vaccine against the coronavirus, are completed.

Currently, Mambisa is being used in two studies, in combination with the Abdala vaccine, another CIGB formula against Covid.

The director of Biomedical Research of the CIGB, Gerardo Guillén Nieto, was satisfied in statements to Granma for the results obtained so far.

Mambisa is one of the 11 vaccine candidates against Covid worldwide for nasal administration, Guillén explained.

However, he added, it is the “only one obtained by genetic engineering”, with “recombinant protein” with more than “99% purity”, for which he considered it “a very safe drug”.

Mambisa’s antigen against SARS-CoV2 is the same as Abdala’s, which has already obtained emergency authorization from CECMED and has been inoculated in more than 8 million Cubans.

Cuba has not bought vaccines abroad, but has developed its own formulas in the state biopharmaceutical complex.

Currently, it is administering three different vaccines (Abdala, Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus) to its population from 2 years of age in a massive campaign.

Some 10 million Cubans, out of a total population of 11.2 million people, have already received the complete immunization schedule in the country. They account for 90% of the total population and 95% of the population.

In addition, some 6.2 million people have also received the booster dose.
