A resident of South Lake Tahoe, municipality of El Dorado County, California, has contracted the plague, informs a press release from the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency released Aug. 17. It’s the first case of the disease since 2015 when two people had been infected in the region, according to CNN.
The person in question was likely bitten by an infected flea while walking their dog, the statement said. The patient is now at his home where he is monitored by a health professional, says the Agency.
Precautionary measures to take
Normally, it is fleas that infect humans or pets that bring infected fleas home, the statement said.
“It is important that individuals take precautions for themselves as well as their pets when they are outdoors, especially when walking, hiking and / or camping in areas where wild rodents are present ”, it is indicated.
Among other things, regional health authorities recommend not to feed squirrels and other wild rodents as well as never touch sick, injured or dead rodents.
Several cases of bubonic plague
