First day without confirmed corona death in Portugal since March | 03.08.20

LISBON (dpa-AFX) – In the popular holiday destination Portugal, for the first time since the outbreak of the corona pandemic in mid-March, there was a day without an officially confirmed death in connection with Covid-19. However, 106 new infections were registered within 24 hours, the health authorities said in Lisbon on Monday.

The first Corona-related death was recorded in Portugal on March 16. At that time it was an 80-year-old man who was infected with the Sars-Cov-2 virus. Since then there has been no day without corona deaths. In total, Portugal reported more than 51,000 documented infections and 1,738 deaths.

For a long time, Portugal was one of the countries in Europe that had come through the crisis relatively well and with few contagion and casualty numbers. For a few weeks now, however, there has been an increase in new infections, especially in the greater Lisbon area. The situation there has eased slightly in the past few days.
