The first consumers who received a higher energy bill because of the higher gas price were shocked. Several energy companies have increased energy prices by up to 60 percent for some of their customers.
“I was shocked, I have a variable rate and my monthly amount goes up from 116 euros to 196 euros,” says Erik Wesselius from Bennekom. He is affiliated with supplier Om, which exceptionally raises the prices for people with a variable contract from November.
“An increase of 80 euros per month, that is just under 1000 euros per year,” says Wesselius. “You can go on holiday for a week.” He didn’t think his rate would rise so quickly. “You hear it, you read it and think, it will be. Something is going on, but what exactly, because I don’t see anything around me yet. And then you get a letter like that and then it becomes very concrete.”
Can’t be right
The price for gas has risen sharply in recent months, and especially in recent weeks. Most households do not have to deal with high energy bills until later. For variable contracts, January 1 is usually the time when prices are adjusted. Households that have fixed an energy price for a longer period of time will have to deal with higher rates when their contract expires. But there are companies that are already raising the price.
“I received an email with the message that my installment amount was increased from 290 euros to 464 euros per month,” says Peter (46) from ‘s-Hertogenbosch. He is a customer of Vrijopnaam. “I was shocked. I couldn’t believe it and thought it couldn’t be right. I called the energy company. There I was told that it was indeed correct and that the rates for some customers, like me, were reduced by 60 percent. are being increased.”
