First Case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Detected in Idaho Dairy Cattle

CBS2 News Staff | Thursday, Mar 28th 2024

Boise, ID – The Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) has reported the first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in livestock operations in Cassia County. The outbreak has been detected in dairy cattle, and the ISDA attributes the spread of the virus to the recent importation of cattle from a state that has identified cases of the virus.

HPAI poses a significant risk to the dairy industry as the virus is transmitted from cow to cow, as well as from infected birds. Dairy farms in the region are encouraged to closely monitor their herds and promptly seek veterinary assistance if any symptoms arise.

Common symptoms of the virus include a drop in milk production, loss of appetite, changes in manure consistency, the presence of thickened or colostrum-like milk, and low-grade fever.

Despite concerns over the outbreak, the ISDA has assured the public that there is no threat to the safety of the commercial milk supply for consumer health at present.
