In Naples, where the “golden boy” celebrated his greatest successes, numerous football fans gathered in front of the stadium named after Maradona. In the town of Garín, north of Buenos Aires, three sisters from Maradona attended a mass for the Argentine national hero. His ex-girlfriend Verónica Ojeda and his son Dieguito laid flowers at the grave.
“In the heart of every fan”
The family lawyer posted a proposal for an official memorial in Buenos Aires on Maradona’s Instagram account. “You never left us,” wrote Maradona’s former club Boca Junior on Twitter. “You are in the heart of every fan.” The Argentine Football Association (AFA) renamed its headquarters in Buenos Aires the “Diego Armando Maradona Building”. “Diego Armando Maradona is a legend,” said the association’s statement. “It lives on in his people, whom he has never disappointed.”
Maradona died of a heart attack on November 25th last year in a private residential complex north of Buenos Aires at the age of 60. He had undergone brain surgery a few weeks earlier. Apparently, massive mistakes had been made in the home care of the former top athlete, who was in severe health problems. The public prosecutor’s office is investigating the treating doctors and nursing staff for manslaughter.
