Fires in Gironde: a beekeeper loses nearly 3 million bees

While Alexandre Gouëllo was finally going to make beekeeping his main activity, the fire in Gironde ravaged all of his livestock of 50 hives located in the place called Troupins, next to Landiras. A tragedy for this 41-year-old man who lost 50 hives, i.e. “more than 2,700,000 bees” in the flames that burned about 14,000 hectares of forest.

Taken aback by the unpredictability of the fire, he did not have time to move his hives. Especially since “bees don’t run away”he explains to South Gironde Republican. “When they smell smoke, they go back into the hive to protect the queen. They stuff themselves with honey to last several days without going out.”

The beekeeper was only able to return to the scene of the tragedy a few days later, on July 15, after having had the authorization of the firefighters. Moved, he noted the damage of more than ten years of work, gone up in smoke in just three days.
