Fire: The picture of the fire in Pieria Ori is better – 4th day in flames – 2024-04-05 21:47:25

Thessnews.gr points out that the fire brigades continue to fight the flames in the Pieria Mountains, for the fire that has been raging for the fourth day in a row.

According to Fire Department sources, the front of the fire is better than the previous days and now, it is a matter of time to bring it under control.

At the same time, however, strong forces of the fire department continue to attempt to extinguish it. Specifically, 150 firefighters with 36 water vehicles are at the scene, with the assistance of 9 hiking volunteer units.

The fire started on Sunday in the Sarakatsana area and from 1100 meters it reached the ridge at 1900 meters. So far, the extent of the fire has not been determined, but the damage is said to be mild.

Today, 150 firefighters, nine infantry units, 36 vehicles, two helicopters and the “IKAROS 1” team with drones are operating at the point where the fire is progressing – according to the fire department “in scattered fires within the perimeter”.

How did the fire start and what is its extent?

“The fire started in the Pieria Mountains above the village of Ritini Pieria at an altitude of 1100 meters on Sunday at noon. And it reached the ridge at 1900 meters almost at the borders of Kozani prefecture”, said the Director of Pieria Forests, Petros Papapetrou.

According to the Director of Forestry “the fire is mostly creeping, meaning it is under the trees and burning the understory vegetation. The fire in a few places turned into an epitopical one, that is, burning the tops of trees. However, even in these few cases, the fire spread only to the conifers because they are more flammable, while the broad-leaved trees did not suffer any damage”, as reported in Olympio Vima.
