Fire brigade in Waasland builds its own tunnel from containers: “We cannot always practice in real tunnels”

Intervention in a tunnel is not an easy task for the fire brigade, often there is no light or little oxygen is present. To complete an intervention quickly and safely, the firefighters must practice on such a tunnel intervention. “The theory is not the same as the real environment. We can practice in real tunnels, but that often takes up mobility, ”explains fire chief Thierry Van Goethem. “In our region, these are all highway tunnels. We cannot close a tunnel every day to practice, that has consequences for traffic. ”

That is why the fire brigade in the Waasland thought: why not build a tunnel yourself? “We are not building the tunnel with Lego bricks, but with sea containers, so we are building a tunnel of realistic size.” There have been a number of incidents in tunnels in recent months. “The Beverentunnel, Liefkenshoektunnel and Tijsmansstunnel are often among them. We have already learned some things through those incidents, but we want to be able to train on them in peace. Now we can spend a whole day in the tunnel trying things out, without obstructing traffic. ”
