Fiorentina’s Debut in Conference League Ends in a 2-2 Draw Against Genk: A Recap and Player Ratings

Negative debut for Fiorentina in the circles of Conference League: the Viola do not go beyond a 2-2 draw at home Genk in a match where dead balls are decisive. The double of Ranieri (7′ and 23′) actually came from a corner, as did McKenzie’s final equalizer (85′). Zeqiri also scored (12′), with the thrill of Arokodare’s post at the end. And Italiano loses Nico Gonzalez, forced to come off at half-time due to injury.

THE MATCH

Dead balls decide Genk-Fiorentina: with three corners and a free kick, it ends 2-2 in Belgium. The Viola squandered their lead twice and returned to Florence with just one point. The match starts immediately with a bang: in the 7th minute, in fact, Biraghi’s corner ends up on the head of Ranieri, who beats a terrible Vandevoort unable to block the shot. Five minutes later, however, it was 1-1: from a free kick, a rebound favored Zeqiri who equalized from a few steps away. But it was Luca Ranieri’s evening in Belgium, who doubled the lead again midway through the first half with a header from a corner, but this time thanks to Milenkovic’s save. The first half would be perfect like this, but the problem arrives for Italiano: Nico Gonzalez is forced to come off due to injury and make way for Kouamé in the second half.

In the second half, the hosts attacked but without creating any great opportunities, on the contrary: it was Nzola, who entered in the last quarter of the match, who ate up the match point by heading Parisi’s cross high, while previously the Ranieri-Milenkovic relay was reversed with the Serbian finishing high from an excellent position. In the 85th minute, however, the cold shower: corner and header by McKenzie, who makes it 2-2 by beating Christensen. And in the final, Genk even threatened to win it, but Arokodare’s powerful left-footed shot into the area crashed into the post. He therefore ends up in a draw and considering the final thrill it could even go well like this. But Italiano is immediately forced to chase Ferencvaros, who beat Cukaricki 3-1 and will present themselves at the Franchi as leaders.

REPORT CARDS

Vandevoort 5 – He has serious responsibility for Viola’s 1-0: Ranieri’s header was far from uncatchable.

Zeqiri 7 – He has the merit of being in the right place at the right time to seal the temporary 1-1, keeping his team alive.

Ranieri 8 – He is not the best on the pitch just for his brace, but also for his defensive solidity and his ability to show up forward with a pure winger’s tunnel.

Beltran 5 – Wasted the chance from the first minute with a lackluster performance: rarely dangerous and not very present.
