Still positive numbers for Finocchiona PGI: in 2023 the production value is estimated at approximately 14.5 million euros while the total of sales is close to 25 million euros. Despite a minimal decline in bagging (-0.54% compared to 2022), the product certified and placed on the market recorded a slight increase for the third consecutive year (+0.4%).
In particular, in 2023, a total of 2,369 thousand kilograms of mixture intended for maturing were bagged, corresponding to over 850 thousand pieces, and over 1,920 thousand kilograms were certified and placed on the market, an absolute record. Furthermore, despite recording an 11.1% decrease in packaged volumes, the sliced and packaged product in trays still remains strong with over 3 million units overall. In turn, the product packaged in vacuum-packed slices went against the trend, recording an increase of +5.5%, totaling over 840 thousand kilograms. At a geographical level, the certified production of Finocchiona PGI remains concentrated between Arezzo (638 thousand kilograms), Siena (601 thousand) and Florence (498 thousand).
L’export it now represents 20% of total market shares in the European Union and 4.8% outside the EU. If the opening of new markets, primarily the USA, also represents a key challenge for the future, Germany and England confirm themselves as consolidated destinations with increases in volume compared to 2022 equal to +12% and +13% respectively. Following: Belgium, Denmark and Sweden. Significant increases also outside Europe: +12% for England, +38% for Switzerland and +25% for Canada.
Finally, the commitment of the Consortium for the protection of Finocchiona PGI in favor of environmental sustainability with two projects focused on the protection of bees and biodiversity.
