Finance Minister assures that indebtedness will give results

“The opposition is not bothered by the indebtedness, it bothers them that the operations that are being approved are going to have results,” Finance Minister Alejandro Zelaya said this morning in a morning interview, in response to criticism of the approval of several loans that will further indebt the country and that were ratified last week in plenary session by the ruling party.

On May 11, the Legislative Assembly ratified 7 of 11 loans, which were guaranteed on the same day they were requested.

Two of the ratifications that were made were the debt to finance phase II and III of the Territorial Control Plan, which together add up to $ 200 million and another for $ 250 million to finance the 2021 budget gap. Both have been agreed with the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI).

Zelaya assured that the credits that were approved are “those that were trapped for a year by the previous legislature” and that the security issue has been worked on with state funds. However, these already had approval and only needed ratification by the new legislature.

“The results that we have had in terms of security up to this day, the more than 40 days without homicides to this day, have been financed 100% with the General Fund of the Nation, with the State’s own income because the deputies of the previous legislature they did not approve of anything, ”said the minister.

The loans, one for $ 91 million and the other for $ 109 million for the new phases of the security plan, were questioned by the previous legislature because, according to the former deputies, the Executive did not present a detailed breakdown of how they would be invested.

The refusal to approve these funds triggered the events that occurred on February 9, when Bukele took over the Assembly, entered the Legislative Palace with the army and took the place of the president of Congress.
