Final Fantasy VII Remake – Why the first part only plays in Midgar

Square Enix answers an interesting question today about the remake of ‘Final Fantasy VII’, which is known to appear in episode format. Part 1 only takes place in the Steampunk City Midgar, which is quite surprising to some fans.

An explanation is now provided by producer Yoshinori Kitase, who have significantly expanded the city for the remake. The remake is no longer as small as it originally seemed at the time. To Kitase writes:

“At the beginning of the project we had two directions in which we could go. The first was to create the project with the best possible graphics, visual quality and attention to detail and not remove anything that the fans wanted to see. Instead, it would expand the original game to make it even more haunting.

The other option was to summarize the full scope of the original game in a single version. However, for this to work as a modern game, we cannot achieve the best visual quality, and we would also have to reduce areas and scenes from the original. ”

However, a summary of the original story would have been something fans probably didn’t want. Therefore, it was decided that the best option for the project was to reach the best possible level with an expanded history.

The episode format allowed you to focus on putting everything people loved in the game – and since Midgar is an icon of Final Fantasy VII, you had to start the game with it.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released on April 10, 2020.
