In the first film, “Venom”, we meet Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), a broken man who has lost everything. When he is accidentally infected by an indefinable organism, he gains superhuman powers and unfortunate desires, including a strong attraction to cannibalism.

Despite the disadvantages of being infected, he comes to terms with the creature that has settled in his body, and they decide to use their powers to accomplish something good.

Second film does not begin long after the action in the first ended, and Brock has not yet gotten used to sharing body with Venom. They have their disagreements, and separate teams. Not surprisingly, in each other’s absence, they realize that they are in fact dependent on the other party to function.

Also, a supervillain (Woody Harrelson) threatens the city of San Francisco, and the radar pair are the only ones strong enough to have a chance at all.

Embarrassing attempts at humor

Andy Serkis, who for most is best known for portraying Gollum in “The Lord of the Rings”, is directing. He does not refer here to any distinctive style, and the film is more reminiscent of an insignificant episode in the middle of a TV series than it actually is, an all-night feature film.

The script is hasty. The film throws the audience into the story without further introduction or structure. There are no scenes that enhance the credibility of the universe, or deepen the story. Only the most necessary is represented, and since the film follows a well-known recipe, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” becomes predictable to follow.

Attempts at humor are often embarrassing, and the actors look uncomfortable when delivering their lines. Tom Hardy is monotonous in the lead role, and has little to play on. Woody Harrelson has been given a slightly more colorful opportunity in the role of serial killer Cletus Kasady.

That said, I wonder if Harrelson has forgotten how to play acting? In any case, Serkis’ instructions do not bring out the talent in him, and it becomes convulsive to witness the role interpretation of Kasady, which is neither funny nor threatening.

Not a single bright spot

It’s rare for an action movie to need longer playing time, but this movie gets too flimsy. The characters do not develop sufficiently, and the conflicts do not unfold long enough for the audience to have time to invest in the drama. It is not certain that an extra hour would benefit the film, for the foundation is already pill rotten. There is not a single bright spot in the 90 minutes that pass before the scrolling text arrives.

“Venom: Let There Be Carnage” is an assembly line film, and is reminiscent of what was previously referred to as “films that came straight to video”. Now the new “Venom” movie will be shown in cinemas, there is no reason to waste time and money on it.
