Film Reviews: The Flying Classroom, DogMan, and Ingeborg Bachmann – Journey to the Desert

THE FLYING CLASSROOM
Evaluation: ***

It is one of Erich Kästner’s most prominent works: “The Flying Classroom”. Martin becomes Martina (Leni Deschner), who leads a manageable existence in a Berlin high-rise complex with her mother and brother. When the chance for a scholarship in South Tyrol beckons, she is beside herself. What she doesn’t suspect: The fronts between the boarding school students and the “externals” have hardened. Can a play restore peace? Carolina Hellsgård succeeds in interpreting this core question in a contemporary way. With a lot of girl power, she thinks of the story as a vivid coming-of-age portrait. Thanks to Tom Schilling as the boarding school director Bökh, it’s also a bittersweet treat for older audiences. (pog)

DOGMAN
Evaluation: ***

It is difficult to classify “DogMan”: Luc Besson’s strange film, which premiered in Venice, is an abuse drama, crime thriller, emancipation story and dog love film. The story is told about a queer man and his life in a dog community. Humiliated, locked away and shot by his father (Clemens Schick), Doug (Caleb Landry Jones) somehow survives. Despite weak legs, he is a stand-up character in a wheelchair. His dogs are his accomplices. And, unlike people, always there for him. The 33-year-old Jones is at his best in this theatrical role in this anything but subtle film; including when he sings Piaf songs. (js)

INGEBORG BACHMANN – JOURNEY TO THE DESERT
Evaluation: ***

The pioneer director finds a clever contrasting element in Bachmann’s later trip to Egypt with her young lover, which she incorporates as a foreshadowing into the tragically colored love story with Frisch. In doing so, she grants Ingeborg Bachmann a way out that is more optimistic than the real end of her life in an apartment fire in Rome in 1973.
Even though the drama is – for better or worse – noticeably a German film about a famous Austrian, it also shines internationally thanks to Vicky Krieps and the impressive visual design. (maw) You can read a detailed review here.
