Journalist Danutė Jokubėnienė reported on his death on Facebook on Thursday.
“Sad news. Relatives have just announced that director Vytautas Damaševičius has died a couple of hours ago. Not only a great chronicler of our documentary film, but also the soul of Žvėrynas and a walking encyclopedia (…). Rest in peace, restless and virtuous soul, ”said D. Jokubėnienė.
According to her, the director supplemented his series of ten documentaries “Old Vilnius People” with two films this summer, as well as events planned to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Žvėrynas next year.
V. Damaševičius, born in 1940, has been working at the Lithuanian Film Studio since 1963. He graduated from the Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) in the 1980s, after which he worked as a documentary filmmaker for the Lithuanian Film Studio for more than a decade.
Since 1993, he has been making portraits, historical, household and social films with director and cinematographer Juozas Matonis. The major part of V. Damaševičius’ work consists of cycles of cultural films: “Portraits of Artists” (since 1994, more than 60 films), the cycle “Lithuanian Cultural Heritage” created since 1996, “Rehearsal: Pulse of the Theater” since 1997. .
V. Damaševičius worked as a second cinematographer in the making of Raimondas Vabalas ‘feature films Smokas ir Mažylis (1975), Matches from 9 to 9 (1980), Almantas Grikevičius’ Homestead Empty Time (1976), Faktas (1981), Gytis The Autumn of My Childhood (1977).
He and Peter Abukevičius directed the documentaries Stumbras, Lapė (both 1981), Return (1990), as well as Saigakai (1982), Rural Teachers (1983), and Ieva wants to sing ( 1984), “Late Fire” (1988), “Sad Venice” (1990), “Children of the Barricades” (1991), “The Road to Everest” (1992), “My Village” (1992), “The True History of the Army of Craiova” (1993), “To fulfill the will of God: Cardinal Vincentas Sladkevičius” (1996) and others.
