Fill in the Shopee Boss Letter to Employees About Mass Layoffs

Jakarta

The news that Shopee will carry out mass layoffs is confirmed by Shopee CEO Chris Feng. This is known from Chris Feng’s leaked internal memo to his employees.

Shopee will lay off several workers on the ShopeeFood and ShopeePay teams in the Southeast Asia region. They will also relinquish parts of their teams in Mexico, Argentina and Chile, as well as cross-border teams that support markets in Spain, according to the same leaked internal memo.

In a memo known to be sent Monday evening 13 June, Chris Feng said his party made several adjustments to optimize the company’s operations.

“Given the increasing uncertainty in the broader sector of the economy, it is very difficult for us to make adjustments to improve our operational efficiency and focus our resources,” said Chris Feng in a leaked internal memo that circulated quoted by Straits Time, Wednesday (15/6/). 2022).

Staff were notified of the impending layoffs at an internal international meeting on Monday. It is also stated that those who will be dismissed will be notified via email.

Shopee is also said to be ceasing its operations in Spain, after previously closing its operations in France and India. However, Chris Feng emphasized that Shopee’s business will continue to run in Mexico, Chile and Southeast Asia.

“Our business will continue to operate as usual in Shopee Mexico, Argentina, Chile, as well as for ShopeeFood and ShopeePay in Southeast Asia. We are committed to providing the same level of support to our users, partners and merchants in all of these markets,” said Feng.

The memo did not specify which Southeast Asian countries would be affected by the layoffs. What is clear, Shopee has major operations in Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines, with regional headquarters in Singapore.

“I have added that the company is already doing the best we can to support the affected workers, as the move will have a huge impact on them and their families,” Feng said.

Since yesterday detik.com have tried to confirm with Shopee Indonesia whether layoffs will occur in Indonesia as well or not. However, so far there has been no answer.
