An EasyJet flight was escorted to its destination in Menorca by a Spanish jet fighter yesterday after a British teenager on board made a false bomb threat via social media. The flight was en route from London to the Spanish island of Menorca.

The 18-year-old was planning a vacation with five friends. He spent a night in jail and is awaiting an interrogation, a spokesman for the Spanish Guardia Civil said.

The plane landed half an hour later than planned and was escorted to a special security zone. Passengers were disembarked one by one. Their luggage has been checked by sniffer dogs and experts from the explosive ordnance disposal service. Other flights were also affected by the incident.

An EasyJet spokesperson confirmed that the flight was accompanied by a military aircraft and that the disembarkation was delayed due to security checks, but would not say anything further.
