FIFA is considering holding the World Cup more often

The “Guardian” and the “Daily Mail” revealed that the holding of the World Cup finals every three years would be supported by the African and Asian football confederations, and related changes, if decided in their favour, could be introduced earlier than by 2030.

FIFA had previously tried to push the idea of holding the World Cup finals every two years, but the idea had been opposed by many influential global football organisations, including the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and the Confederation South American football (CONMEBOL) , which are unlikely to support holding the tournament once every three years.

The next 2026 World Cup, which will take place between the USA, Mexico and Canada, will host 48 national teams, which will be divided into subgroups of three units each. The British media also underlined that FIFA does not rule out the possibility of dividing the national teams into subgroups made up of four teams, but in this case the total number of matches in the final tournament would rise to 104 matches.

Both of the above options could further increase FIFA’s revenue. After the World Cup finals that have just concluded in Qatar, FIFA has announced that it has generated record revenues of 7.5 billion dollars (about 7 billion euros).

Additionally, FIFA President Gianni Infantino revealed that starting in 2025, 32 teams will compete in the FIFA Club World Cup.
