Feyenoord converts after a thrilling cracker against PSV

Feyenoord has reached the quarter-finals of the TOTO KNVB Cup tournament. In an atmospheric Kuip, Eredivisie leader PSV was defeated 1-0. It had been a year since the Eindhoven club had lost to a Dutch club. Quinten Timber scored the decisive goal before halftime. Feyenoord can prepare for a quarter-final against AZ on February 7, again in De Kuip.

PSV had the upper hand in the first 25 minutes of the intense match between the two best teams in the Netherlands. Feyenoord started with Bart Nieuwkoop as a disguised right winger to curb the danger of the emerging Serginio Dest. Geertruida could therefore more easily create a surplus in midfield, was the tactical idea, but Arne Slot’s team was unable to play football under the pressure. PSV was always able to find Schouten or Tillman in midfield. During that period, Guus Til headed Lozano’s cross onto the outside of the post.

Congregational singing

The supporters in the sold-out Kuip got behind their team. Scarves came out and congregational singing rippled from the stands. Because Calvin Stengs positioned himself more intelligently, Feyenoord seized the initiative. After an attack over many checkers, Quinten Timber was released on the edge of the sixteen. The midfielder left Joel Drommel without a chance with a low shot from the turn.

PSV seemed to have lost it for a while, but had a great chance to equalize before half-time. Jordan Teze placed the ball behind the Trauner – Hancko duo with mathematical precision, after which Guus Til could only approach Justin Bijlow. The Feyenoord goalkeeper made a catty save.

‘A piece of luck’

Peter Bosz pushed Jerdy Schouten back in the second half, a proven recipe from the league match that PSV had won 1-2 at the beginning of December. The game waved up and down, with it mainly the defenders who stood out. Feyenoord was close to 2-0 a number of times from standard situations.

In the 68th minute, all of PSV screamed for a penalty when Noa Lang went down in a duel with Mats Wieffer. The Feyenoord midfielder hit the ball, but also Lang’s foot. Even the most die-hard Feyenoord supporter would not have been surprised if referee Dennis Higler had blown his whistle for a penalty. “It’s a stroke of luck,” Wieffer said afterwards.

Quarter-final against AZ

PSV was unable to get a shot on target in the final stages and De Kuip exploded after Higler’s final whistle. After the defeats in the game for the Johan Cruijf bowl and the competition, PSV was defeated in the third game of the season. FC Emmen last achieved this in the Netherlands more than a year ago.

Feyenoord goes to the quarter-finals and plays a home match against AZ. The last match in the round of 16 will be played on Thursday evening. Stunt team USV Hercules receives SC Cambuur at Sportpark Zoudenbalch in Utrecht. The kick-off is at 8 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN’s open channel.
