Festival in Zurich falls victim to Corona

With the tightened federal measures, a move through the city of Zurich is no longer an option. The zoo has also taken drastic measures.

The federal government has tightened the measures in the fight against the corona virus. Events with more than a hundred people are now prohibited. The instruction is valid until April 30th. The Sechseläuten – the traditional Zurich spring festival – will not be able to be held this year. It should have been on April 20th.

At the request of the NZZ, Victor Rosser from the Central Committee of the Guilds of Zurich said that the new federal instructions would amount to an “actual ban”. “A move with Böögg incineration is unthinkable under these conditions.” At the beginning of the week, talks will be held with this year’s guest canton Uri and guild representatives and then an official communiqué will be sent out.

Rosser considers it unlikely that the guilders celebrate in their guild rooms in private. “The appeal by the Federal Council to everyone’s solidarity was impressive,” he says. He could not imagine celebrating happily in costume under these conditions. Especially since more than fifty people would come together in many guild rooms, which would also be prohibited according to the new federal instructions.

In the long history of the event, the Sechseläuten had to be canceled practically only in the war years.

The Zurich Zoo will also remain closed until further notice. The management announced this on Friday. This step was agreed with the authorities. How long the closure will last is currently open. The zoo is constantly evaluating the situation in exchange with the authorities. The supply of all animals is guaranteed at all times. The last time the Zurich Zoo had to be closed in 1949 due to foot and mouth disease.

The State Museum also closes its doors – initially until April 4. The Kunsthaus closes over the weekend and informs at the beginning of the week whether it can open again with restrictions. All bathing and school swimming pools in the city remain closed, as well as the succulent collection and the city garden. Large parts of the city administration will work in the home office starting next Monday.
