Fertilization and precision irrigation in vegetables is the focus of a UCO seminar

The cycle of scientific seminars organized by the Department of Agronomy of the UCO returns on March 25 with the VegSyst-DDS tool, designed for the management of irrigation and fertilization in vegetables, as the protagonist

The management of irrigation and nitrogen fertilization in vegetable crops has been carried out, on many occasions, in an imprecise way, in many cases with an application of nutrients greater than the real needs. This situation of overfertilization generates nitrate contamination in groundwater, endangering certain ecosystems.

To reverse the situation, the VegSyst – DSS application was born, a decision-making support system designed by the universities of Córdoba and Almería together with IFAPA of Granada and the CICYTEX company. The design and implementation of this application will star in the third of DAUCO’s scientific seminars “new research strategies in hydraulic engineering and plant production”, through which the María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence – Department of Agronomy of the University of Córdoba (DAUCO) disseminates the latest research in various fields of agronomy.

The seminar will feature the intervention of the professors of Plant Production Carmen Giménez and Marisa Gallardo, from the universities of Córdoba and Almería respectively. In “VegSyst-DSS-Suite: a simple tool for irrigation management and nitrogen fertilization in vegetable crops” Carmen Giménez will describe the VegSyst-DSS-Suite, designed from the VegSyst vegetable crop growth simulation model . This decision support system (DSS) calculates through water and nitrogen balances the daily needs to apply for both resources, considering crop, climate, soil and management data.

In the second part of the seminar, Marisa Gallardo will explain how the greenhouse VegSyst-DSS has been adapted, which includes fertilization with the most important macroelements in addition to nitrogen.

This simple tool can help technical personnel and the agricultural community to make appropriate decisions in the management of irrigation and nitrogen fertilization of their crops.

The seminar will be held on March 25 between 12:30 and 1:30 pm in Room B8, Building C4 Celestino Mutis, Ranales Campus.
