Ferti-irrigation system integrates paiche and banana cultivation on a pilot scale in Piura

ERP. In order to optimize the water resources of the Piura region, the National Program for Innovation in Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Ministry of Production (PNPA) implemented the automated ferti-irrigation system to integrate the cultivation of paiche and banana on a pilot scale in the Caserío Las Vegas – Cieneguillo Sur, Piura.

This co-financed project was executed through the Adaptive research fund – SIA. Meanwhile, the executing entity was ECONOGAS SRLtda in alliance with CMC Latin.

In this ferti-irrigation system, the aquaculture effluents from the paiche crop were used. This makes it possible to take advantage of the organic nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus present in the effluent to contribute to the fertilization of the banana crop. For this purpose, a manual of Good Aquaculture Practices (GAP) and the Hygiene and Sanitation Program (PHS) have been prepared in order to follow the appropriate protocols.

Likewise, there is a modernized irrigation system by micro-sprinkling for the cultivation of the aforementioned fruit in 100% of its implementation, which promotes the responsible use of water.

It is important to highlight that this system is part of the 93 projects that contribute to the innovation and economic reactivation of Piura whose approximate scope exceeds 10 thousand people who live in Ayabaca, Sechura, Talara, Paita, Piura and Huancabamba, respectively.

As for the species that arouse interest for research and technical assistance in conjunction with PNIPA, they are: scallop, squid, parakeet, tilapia, trout, paiche, anchovy and prawn.

It is important to indicate that the co-financing achieved in the city of Piura is 24.1 million soles, of which 80% is financed by the PNIPA and 20% by more than 180 institutions such as fisheries unions, aquaculture producers, companies, universities, non-governmental organizations, among others that make up the regional innovation system in fisheries and aquaculture.
