Ferry sails at high speed on rocks near Ibiza, at least 12 injured | Inland

There were 35 passengers and 12 crew members on board. Twelve people were injured, including two seriously. It concerns a 10-year-old boy, who was transferred by helicopter to a hospital in Mallorca, and an adult man.

The accident happened around 10 p.m., shortly after the departure not far from the port of Ibiza. The shipping company stated that the safety protocol was immediately put into effect and the responsible authorities were notified. The ship’s occupants were taken to Ibiza in dinghies, the official statement said. At least six were taken to hospital there.

High speed

“The cause of the accident is still unknown,” said the head of the rescue service of the Balearic Islands, Miguel Félix Chicón, in a radio interview on Sunday. In the accident, the ferry must have collided with the rock at a speed of about 30 knots (more than 55 kilometers per hour).

The ferry was badly damaged in the accident. The San Gwann has only been sailing between Ibiza and Formentera since the end of June. The crossing takes about half an hour.
