Ferrol is the municipality in Spain with the lowest activity rate

Ferrol leads the national list of cities with the lowest activity rate, with 49.9, a ‘top ten’ in which Ourense also enters, with 51.7. The municipality of Oleiros in A Coruña is once again the municipality with more than 20,000 inhabitants with the highest income per inhabitant, and is located among the 25 richest in Spain.

This is evidenced by the data from the statistics of urban indicators made public this Monday by the National Institute of Statistics and, according to which, the richest municipality in Spain is Pozuelo de Alarcón, with an average income per inhabitant of 26,367 euros.

In the case of Galicia, Oleiros is the municipality with the highest income per inhabitant, 16,447 euros, and it is also number 23 in the Spanish ranking. In the list of 50 municipalities with the highest per capita income are two other Galicians, Santiago de Compostela, with 14,636 euros per inhabitant, and A Coruña, with 14,536 euros.

On the contrary, the Galician community does not have any municipality among the 50 with the lowest income per inhabitant from Spain. Those with the least income, according to the INE, are Lalín (Pontevedra), with 10,318 euros; Marín (Pontevedra), with 10,683 euros and Carballo (A Coruña), with 10,853.

If the ‘functional urban areas’ -metropolitan areas of influence- are taken into account, it is A Coruña that leads the Galician ranking, in tenth national position, with 13,955 euros per inhabitant and year.

Santiago, lower unemployment rate

Regarding the unemployment rates in Spanish cities, Santiago de Compostela is among the 15 with the lowest rate at the national level and is the one with the best data at the Galician level.

Specifically, reflects the INE, it has an unemployment rate of 9.9, which places it in 12th place among the Spanish cities with the lowest unemployment rate. A little below -position 14- is Lugo, with 10.3. On the other side of the table, the Galician cities with the highest unemployment rate are Ferrol –14.9– and Vigo –14.83–, both very far from the range of 30.9 to 24.3 in unemployment rate of the 15 Spanish cities with the highest index.

Ferrol, for its part, leads the national list of cities with the lowest activity ratewith a 49.9, a ‘top ten’ in which it also enters Ourense, with 51.7. The ranking of cities with the highest activity rate does not have any Galician among the top 15.

By type of employment, the functional urban area of ​​Vigo is the one with the best data in proportion of employment in industry, 19.1% –the seventh at the national level–.

According to Statistics data, Pozuelo (Madrid) is the municipality in Spain with the lowest estimated average unemployment rate in 2021, with 6.2%, followed by Sant Cugat del Vallès (6.4%) and Las Rozas de Madrid (7.1%).

On the contrary, Linares (Jaén), with 30.9%, followed by La Línea de la Concepción (30.3%) and Alcalá de Guadaíra (26.9%) presented the highest unemployment rates.

After Pozuelo, Sant Cugat del Vallès and Las Rozas, the Madrid municipality of Majadahonda (7.4%), Donostia/San Sebastián (7.8%) and Getxo (7.9%) also stand out for their low unemployment rates.

In this way, of the 15 municipalities with the lowest estimated average unemployment rates for 2021, six are in the Community of Madrid, four in Catalonia, three in the Basque Country and two in Galicia.

On the other hand, among the first five municipalities with the most unemployment, four are located in Andalusia: Linares, with a rate of 30.9%; La Línea de la Concepción (30.3%), Alcalá de Guadaira (26.9%) and Jerez de la Frontera (26%). The fifth municipality with the highest unemployment rate is Santa Lucía de Tirajana, in Gran Canaria, with 26%.

Thus, of the 15 municipalities with the most unemployment, eleven belong to the Community of Andalusia and four to the Canary Islands (Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Arrecife, Telde and Santa Cruz de Tenerife).

Regarding activity rates, the cities with the highest in 2021 were Rivas-Vaciamadrid (69.7%), Valdemoro (68.8%) and Parla (67.4%). On the opposite side, the cities with the lowest activity rates were Ferrol (49.9%), León (50.2%) and Salamanca (50.4%).
