Fell on the ice: – The future ruined

– I hope there will be a change. My future has changed due to dangerous ice on sidewalks that should have been cleared away, says Cecilie Djupvik Langlo (34) to Dagbladet.

Four years ago, she slipped on a lump of ice on a sidewalk and suffered an ugly fracture in her leg. Now she is working hard against what she calls “unacceptable and deficient” plowing, salting and scattering of sidewalks in Oslo and the surrounding area.

Langlo lives in Oslo with her husband and stepchildren.

– Why is nothing being done about this? Now I’m approaching my 4th birthday because such a change changed my life forever, and I’m terrified every time I go out.

Broke the whole leg

Langlo remembers how it felt that winter, and that she daily thought that someone would be seriously injured due to impossible walking conditions.

– I was going to work in Lysaker, a little outside Oslo, and on the way there there was a lump of ice in the road. I slipped and broke my whole leg, she says.

The 34-year-old was picked up by an ambulance and first taken to a hospital, then to another. In the evening, the health personnel discovered that there was high pressure on her leg, and that she had lodge syndrome.

Acute muscle lodge syndrome can occur after injuries that lead to a lot of swelling or bleeding in the muscles, according to Lommelegen.

The City Council for the Environment and Transport in Oslo responds to the criticism further down in the case.

Had to quit my job

Langlos’ leg was operated on twice – and the leg was screwed together with screws. She stayed in the hospital for a week, but it was the aftermath that got worse.

She received training, but it did not help.

– I did not know how hard it was going to hit me. I tried to go back to work and continued my normal life, but it did not work because of severe pain.

She has tried to work fifty percent, but Langlo has had chronic pain. Sitting for a long time is too painful.

– I can not work. I have suffered nerve damage and muscles that are unable to rebuild, says Langlo who goes on work clearance money.

She hopes she can work in the future, but does not think she can work close to what it was before.

– It feels quite awful. I had a job I enjoyed and I was on my way up in my career. I am now sitting on a sky-high student loan that I do not have the opportunity to pay. It has been very tough to make ends meet.

– Horrors of thought

That it should be safer to walk in bicycle lanes and roads, than on sidewalks and walking paths is unacceptable. And it does not only apply when it is slippery, says Langlo, who is from Sykkylven in Møre og Romsdal.

– From the first snow settles, pedestrians are once again not given priority, she says.

At the hospital, Langlo experienced that it was packed due to so many injuries on the ice.

– Enough is enough. I shudder at the thought of how many others than me who have had much of their future ruined due to inadequate plowing, salting and scattering.

– Sad

Dagbladet has presented the criticism to City Councilor Sirin Stav (MDG) for the environment and transport in Oslo. She says that their goal is for everyone to move around the city safely.

– It is very sad when people slip on the ice and get permanent injuries. That is why we have significantly increased our efforts with plowing and spreading in recent years, she tells Dagbladet.

Many inquiries

It is clear that many Oslo residents are dissatisfied with the winter conditions in the city. The Urban Environment Agency in Oslo, which is responsible for winter operation of Oslo’s public roads and streets, received 2316 inquiries and complaints in January. That is almost four times as much as last year and over 20 times as much as the year before.

City Council Stav says that it is demanding to have all the streets of Oslo strewn at all times, but that the agency and the contractors do the best they can.

– When conditions are as demanding as they are now, the agency puts in all capacity and sprinkles record amounts of gravel, she says.
