In an interview with “GQ” magazine, he answered this difficult question.
This is the break point at Roland Garros in 2009 against Tommy Haas.
Federer had found himself in the shoes of the big favorite that year in Paris after the early eliminations of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. He was lucky to win the French Open for the first time. But in the round of 16 against Haas, nothing was going well. The Bâlois found himself cornered 6-7 5-7 3-4 and a break point for Haas. On the return of the German, he had taken all the risks to surprise his opponent. The ball clawed the line, the break point was annihilated. Then, Federer turned the tide of the game, before winning in the final against Robin Söderling his only success at Roland Garros. It also tied Peter Sampras’ record for 14 Grand Slam tournaments.
After this move, the impetus in the game completely changed. If the ball had missed the line, I would certainly have lost the game, says Federer.
