Federal negotiations: preformers De Wever and Magnette throw in the towel

Friday morning, the Liberals were received by the preformers. The meeting did not last more than an hour. The one planned with the greens was canceled.

Lhe preformers Bart De Wever (N-VA) and Paul Magnette (PS) noted on Friday that they were no longer able to move forward in the mission entrusted to them on July 20 by the King, after a new (brief) meeting with the presidents of the liberal parties, we learn from a good source.

Monday, the two men should propose to the sovereign to return their apron, to make room for others. Friday, we even learn, from a well-informed source, that the duo was ready to throw in the towel on the same day, but that it will have to wait until Monday because the King was not available immediately.

“During meetings with the Liberals, they did not agree to go into the depths of the discussions, to talk about content, they first wanted to know what was the envisaged harness”. This requirement of the liberals to fix the composition of the team before starting to talk about content would be at the origin of the observation of the preformers of the impossibility to continue, indicates a source close to the file.

Meeting with the Greens canceled

While there had been talk for several days of a new meeting between the preformers Paul Magnette (PS) and Bart De Wever (N-VA) with the presidencies of the ecological parties (Ecolo and Groen) on Friday, it was finally not nothing, Ecolo communicates the same day. No new date is planned for the moment, while the royal missionaries are expected at the Palace on Monday to report on the progress of their work.

“The meeting which was envisaged was canceled”, specifies a press secretary of the Green party. “The Greens are not invited by the missionaries,” said Ecolo, whose co-presidents had spoken at length with the duo of preformers no later than last Wednesday.

At the end of this previous meeting, we knew that the “institutional scheme” envisaged by Paul Magnette and Bart De Wever continued to greatly hamper environmentalists. But we heard that the different parties would meet again quickly. A possibility that seems to be falling apart for the moment, if we are to believe Ecolo.

Charged with royal mission since July 20, preformers Bart De Wever (N-VA) and Paul Magnette (PS) have managed to form a “bubble of five” parties willing to start discussions with a view to forming a new federal government. This bubble includes the PS, the sp.a, the N-VA, the CD &; V and the cdH. However, it only has 69 seats out of the 150 in the House. The support of at least one additional party is therefore necessary and the preformers are exploring on the side of the liberals and environmentalists.

On Thursday, the liberal (MR – Open Vld) and green (Ecolo – Groen) parties however hinted at their fed up, via a joint press release. In this text, the two families say “refuse to take part in an escalation that pits them against each other”, and sharply criticize the institutional reform projects that would be included in the note by Bart De Wever and Paul Magnette. They finally demanded “clarity about the coalition” which is preferred by the preformers.
