Federal negotiations: Lachaert of the last chance

The king appointed Egbert Lachaert, the president of the Open Vld, as a royal missionary in an attempt to form a government. A failure will have serious consequences while Sophie Wilmès will have to ask for the confidence of the Chamber in less than a month.

451 days after the May 2019 elections, the king appointed Egbert Lachaert for the 9th royal mission since the election. At the same time, he acknowledged the failure of the mission of Paul Magnette and Bart De Wever by accepting their resignation.

The leader of the Flemish liberals, who only took the head of his party on May 22, 2020, was given the task “to take the necessary initiatives allowing the establishment of a government which relies on a large majority in parliament ”. He will make a first report to the Head of State within ten days, on August 28th.
