Fears of hospitalization and running away from hobbies. The research mapped how the Czechs experienced the pandemic

“The Czechs were most helped by hobbies, long-distance contact with friends and watching series and movies. In front of the tense atmosphere created by reports in the media and on social networks about the ever-increasing number of coronavirus victims, they also found refuge at work, “said Jiří Čeněk from the Institute of Social Studies of the MENDELU Faculty of Regional Development and International Studies.

On the contrary, during the pandemic, people did not look much for a way out of the faith, which may be related to the prevailing atheism in society.

According to Čeňek, the most frequent people complained about difficulties at work, loss of human contact and separation from their partner in connection with the pandemic and restrictions. They also did not like restrictions on personal freedoms and closed shopping centers.

The survey showed that while people feared hospitalization during the pandemic, they also declared considerable confidence in health professionals and the domestic health system. The World Health Organization (WHO), which otherwise faced numerous criticisms around the world for its stance on the pandemic, also did well in their eyes.

The stressful factor for the Czechs was the effects of the epidemic on the economy and the uncertainty of how long the restrictive measures will last.

About half of the people considered them adequate. “Maybe that’s why only about twenty percent of people admitted that they bought food supplies for a long time. The vast majority of people said that they tried to keep a physical distance between them in order to prevent the possible transmission and spread of coronavirus, “the research stated, adding that the Czechs complied with the government decree for the most part.

More than 1,500 people took part in the research. The results will be part of a global survey coordinated by experts from Aarhus University. This should reveal the psychological effects of the pandemic.
