«Whites can also be Negroes. I would never have thought that a dark-skinned person would come and feel addressed, »says Walter Brandstetter (71), who owns the carnival car.

Last weekend’s carnival in Wang’s SG becomes a case for the judiciary. “How many ‘Negroes’ do we need in St. Gallen?” Read a moving van. Election posters of the local FDP were printed on it – depicted on it, among others, the Nirosh Manoranjithan (27) councilor in Wangs. For the FDPler with Sri Lankan roots there was no doubt that he was meant by the dirty word “negro”.

Now the prosecutor’s office is investigating a violation of the anti-racism criminal law. The authorities have taken action on their own initiative as it is an official offense. The FDP Sarganserland also reports that Manoranjithan file a complaint about abuse.

Carnival society had reacted
The racist saying was not to be read on the carnival parade itself. The carnival society had intervened and ensured that the word “negro” was covered. Thank you for this “professional reaction”, writes the local FDP in its communiqué.

The owner of the carnival car, however, did not want to apologize for the subject. He tried to talk himself out of BLICK’s request. With the word “negro” he did not aim at Manoranjithan, but it was a synonym for the cantonal council, which decided on things that he did not like. He just used a short word for that.

According to his own information, owner Walter Brandstetter (71) has “posted for the SVP for years”. (LHA)
