  • FC Basel is in a relegation battle.

  • In the middle of this, the club made the 2023 annual report available to its members.

  • The club has had a successful year.

FC Basel will face Servette at home this weekend. Rotblau is currently in tenth place in the table and is six points ahead of GC, which is on Barrageplatz. In short: The Basel team have recently gained a little breathing room in the relegation battle, but they are far from saved.

Amid this difficult time for FCB fans, the club made the 2023 annual report available to its members. The numbers are encouraging. FC Basel 1893 AG reports sales of more than 100 million francs. And a profit of over six million. The “operating result before interest, extraordinary items and taxes” is 6,390,439 francs.

Basel made a lot of money through transfers

There is one main reason for this win. And this is: player transfers with a total value of over 55 million francs. Last summer, FC Basel sold professionals such as Zeki Amdouni (Burnley), Andy Diouf (Lens), Dan Ndoye, Riccardo Calafiori (both Bologna) and Andy Pelmard (Clermont Foot). Only in 2016 did Rotblau have more transfer income, at that time it was 61.4 million francs.

Interesting: The expenditure on transfers only amounts to 9.4 million francs. This number is astonishing. Finally, FC Basel signed over ten players last summer, including expensive talents such as Thierno Barry and Renato Veiga, Juan Gauto, Maurice Malone and Gabriel Sigua. So how can this be?

The reason is simple. FCB boss David Degen told the “Basler Zeitung” last September: “Transfer fees are usually paid in tranches over several years and amortized accordingly. That’s why the rumored totals are not included in the annual accounts exactly.

Uncertainty exists

What is also interesting is the increase in expenses: from almost 73 million francs in 2022 to 95 million in 2023. What is striking is that personnel expenses have remained almost the same at around 30 million francs. Red-blue wanted to minimize this item in recent years.

So everything is fine? Oh well. If you look into the future, there is a certain amount of uncertainty. Because: How is the whole thing supposed to work if FC Basel doesn’t make millions from player transfers?

After the messed up season, it is practically impossible that professionals will be sold again for over 50 million francs in the summer. In addition, there will be no money from European competitions next season. The Basel team missed out on the European places for the first time since 1998.
