The hosts started the game better and set the guests partly close to their own penalty area and had their first own chance in the 21st minute. Iago brought the ball into the penalty area to Andi Zeqiri, but his conclusion was blocked.
In the best phase of FC Augsburg, however, the first Bochum goal fell. VfL skilfully countered via Holtmann who sent Sebastian Polter steeply, who kept his nerve in front of Gikiewicz and overcame him via a tunnel to guide the guests. That shocked the Augsburgers, who shook each other briefly and then had the great chance to equalize.
André Hahn’s header after Iago’s cross landed over the goal. In the next few minutes there were two more setbacks for the hosts, who first had to take Raphael Framberger and then Zeqiri out of the game due to injuries.
The Bochumers still outnumbered a corner ball, which Holtman brought in, and Eduard Löwen’s dropkick welded it into the left corner well worth seeing. A major setback for the FCA, which subsequently did not even manage to save the 0-2 in the break. Again after a corner Polter rose the highest this time and nodded the Bochum 3-0 in Augsburgs Maschen in stoppage time of the first half.
In the second half the FCA was clearly superior and tried everything to somehow get back into the game. Substitute Michael Gregoritsch was always dangerous. This fell after a corner. Daniel Caligiuri stepped up and found Gregoritsch, who was completely free and had no problems decapitating.
Was there something else? It looked like it, because in the next action the hosts had a huge chance to make it 2: 3: Ruben Vargas made ex-FCA player Konstantinos Stafylidis look old in dribbling and played into the six-yard area, where Jan Moravek only had to insert needed. From a distance of three meters, however, he managed not to get the ball into the goal, but to maneuver it over it. This missed the double blow.
Meanwhile, little came from Bochum, Sebastian Reis’ team concentrated on defending. Augsburg missed further good chances through Vargas and Frederik Jensen before substitute Florian Niederlechner took out a penalty. This converted in the 86th minute, Caligiuri sovereign. But the goal came too late, and FC Augsburg couldn’t manage another hit.
Markus Weinzierl saw it more composed and showed understanding for the weak defensive performance at the Bochum corners: “Four central defenders were missing, no Bundesliga team can catch that.” But he also found that the defeat was unnecessary. “If you can’t win, you mustn’t lose.”
But that is exactly what happened to the disadvantage of the FCA and to the delight of the Bochumers, who are now six points in the table ahead of the Augsburgers and can call themselves “Bayernbesiegerbesieger”.
