The alleged assassin from the New York borough of Chelsea apparently acted alone, according to the FBI. “At the moment we see no evidence of a larger cell or the threat of another attack,” said FBI chief James Comey.

Comey spoke to the Senate Interior Committee on Tuesday. 29 people were injured in the bomb attack in New York’s Chelsea nightlife district on September 17. A few hours earlier, a pipe bomb had exploded in Seaside Park in neighboring New Jersey without injuring anyone.

In both cases, 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahami, a US citizen from Afghanistan, is the suspect. He is also said to have deposited other explosive devices that did not explode. Rahami was arrested on charges including terrorist offenses and the use of a “weapon of mass destruction”.

The FBI had already investigated him once in 2014 after Rahami’s father brought him to the attention of the authorities. However, there were no signs of radicalization or terrorist connections.
