Non-invasive and non-irradiating exploration, abdominal ultrasound should be done routinely, annually. This allows the examination of the organs in the abdomen (liver, pancreas, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen) and pelvis (bladder, uterus, ovaries, prostate).
In this exploration, the following are visualized: hepatic steatosis (popularly known as fatty liver), gallstones, nodules or cysts in the liver, pancreas, kidneys, kidney stones, pancreatitis (acute or chronic), intra-abdominal hematomas, vesicular polyps, various formations in the uterus and enlargement of the prostate.
How do you prepare?
For a good view, the abdominal ultrasound is done on an empty stomach (fasting for 6 hours) and with a full bladder. Drink non-acidic liquids, about 1.5 l, and 1 hour before the examination, do not go to the toilet. The day before the exploration, avoid fermenting foods (beans, cabbage).
Info
Abdominal ultrasound is a painless scan with no side effects, and can be repeated whenever needed.
Specialist’s advice
Dr. Olga Oprea, primary physician in internal medicine, general ultrasonography competence, Gral Băneasa Clinic, Bucharest
Abdominal ultrasound can be used as a technique of first choice in the initial evaluation of multiple conditions, but also in their subsequent follow-up. However, a number of factors can reduce the accuracy of diagnosis and exploration, namely the presence of intestinal gas, excess adipose tissue and lack of patient cooperation.
