Fat feet from the heat? ‘Cold foot bath is counterproductive’

Are your rings suddenly a bit tighter? And do you no longer want to wear slipper so smoothly? The heat can make hands and feet thicker. Podotherapist Lotte Haverkorn of RondOm Podotherapists explains how this is possible. “Fat feet arise because blood vessels open up a bit more due to the warm weather. As a result, a little more blood flows to your hands and feet. Due to the natural center of gravity, some more moisture remains in the feet.”

Because there is more moisture in the feet, they swell up a bit. To prevent it from bothering you, it is good to keep moving your feet, according to Haverkorn. “Because it is warm, we move a little less. Simply because it is too hot. But because we move less, the muscle pump in your legs works less and less blood is pumped up.”

Tighten calf muscles

It is therefore important to keep moving, which can be done by doing some exercises at home or at your desk. “For example, you can stand up and get up from your heels on your toes and back again. Then you tighten your calf muscles. You can also do this while sitting at your desk by coming on your toes and back again.”

And now you think: ‘I don’t want to move, I’ll take a cold foot bath’. That seems smart, but it is not. “The cold from a foot bath will close your blood vessels. Your feet may get cold, but your body will try to warm your feet again.” As a result, even more blood is pumped to your feet and can even be counterproductive.

Not too much salt

According to Haverkorn, it also helps not to eat too salty, because salt ensures that you retain more moisture. “If you have tried all this and you still have swollen feet, even when it is not so hot, there may be something else underlying the cause. For example thrombosis, heart failure, varicose veins or lymphedema. In that case, take contact your doctor. “
