“Fascist, your name is on the list”. The demonstration against racism across the country – Observer

The wave of protest in the streets against racism, triggered by the Americans after the death of George Floyd, arrived in Portugal. A protest started this Saturday that brought together citizens of all skin tones across the country, calling for a definitive equality in civil rights for all communities.

At Alamenda D. Afonso Henriques, protesters held up posters with the last words of George Floyd, a black American who died after being held by a policeman and asphyxiated to death: “I can’t breathe”, which in Portuguese means “I can not breathe”. There are also those who take caps criticizing Donald Trump.

Other participants recalled in Alameda one of the anti-racism gestures that marked the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 and that became a symbol of Black Power: the clenched fist raised in the air, like Tommie Smith, an American athlete , made when receiving the gold medal in the 200 meters race. They go on shouting: “Racist, fascist, your name is on the list”. And they ask for “justice” because without it “there is no peace”.
