The beach at Maya Bay in Thailand will reopen to tourists from January 1. The famous beach was closed in 2018 to protect nature. It was originally supposed to remain closed for a short time, but the closure was extended for a few more years in 2019.
The beach on Phi Phi Leh Island gained worldwide fame through the film The Beach from 2000, starring Leonardo di Caprio. Before the closure, the beach attracted about 5000 visitors daily. The boats in which they were transported and the litter caused a lot of damage, especially to the coral.
Not more than an hour
“Nature is back in good condition,” Thai Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-Archa said in a statement which has been seen by CNN. But to prevent the weather from deteriorating due to tourism, stricter rules are now in force: boats are no longer allowed to sail into the bay, but must moor at a pier on the other side of the island.
Only eight boats are allowed to dock there at a time. No more than 300 visitors are allowed on the beach at any one time, and none of them are allowed to stay more than one hour. From 4 p.m. tourists are no longer welcome in the bay.
