More than eight years after his death, the inheritance of the Chilean writer Pedro Lemebel keeps his relatives at odds and, in addition, has had an impact on the sale of his books.

Lemebel passed away on January 22, 2015 at the age of 62 after battling laryngeal cancer for years. As a result of her death and having no offspring, her brother Jorge Mardones Lemebel was his heir.

However, the brother of Pedro Lemebel passed away on January 10, 2021, generating a great dispute between his children and widow. Her youngest daughter and Lemebel’s niece, Geraldinerequested a property partitioning judge for a requirement submitted to the Eighth Civil Court of Santiago.

The other heirs are Jorge’s widow, Bernardita Caro, and her children Daniela and Jorge Mardones. However, the current problem is that they have not included their younger sister in the money received for the works and real estate by Pedro Lemebel.

As Geraldine stated to Las Últimas Noticias, she was born out of her father’s marriage, so they never had a relationship. “The following year, he separated from his wife and went to live outside of Santiago with another person,” she recounted during the interview.

In addition, she affirms that for a time she was close to her sister Daniela, but they distanced themselves when she sued Jorge Mardones Lemebel to legally recognize her as her daughter. “She never forgave me, she never spoke to me again. In fact, he got very angry when I arrived at Pedro’s funeral and he did not notify me when our father died,” he confessed.

Before Jorge died, he left a power of attorney to his daughter Daniela to represent him and she continued to receive semi-annual payments for her uncle’s works. Even, in 2019 he patented the Pedro Lemebel brand in the Industrial Property Registry.

As a result of this, Geraldine contacted the lawyer Felipe González to file a complaint against her brothers. This process caused Editorial Planeta suspend all editions, reissues, publications and distribution of the books of the national writer.

“In January they offered me, through their lawyer, 20 million pesos to give up my father’s inheritance. In April they increased the offer to 25 million pesos. But I want the partition of the assets”, mentioned the woman.

For its part, the publisher announced that it is awaiting the resolution to renew the expired contracts and thus “ensure the distribution of all the work of Pedro Lemebel, in order to allow his literary legacy to continue reaching readers.”
