Failure to extend Iran’s arms embargo makes the world …

WASHINGTON – The Secretary of State of the United States (US), Mike Pompeo, said the failure to extend an arms embargo on Iran would push the world, including Riyadh, New Delhi, Rome and Warsaw, into Iran’s crosshairs. The reason is, after the arms embargo is complete, Iran can buy fighter jets and increase their submarine fleet.

The arms embargo on Iran will end in October and Washington has made significant diplomatic efforts to ensure that it is extended.

The termination of the embargo is part of the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPOA) signed in 2015 between the US, France, Germany, Britain, China and Russia on one hand and Tehran on the other.

“Iran is not a responsible democracy like Australia or India,” Pompeo said in a statement at a UN Security Council meeting, as reported by Al Arabiya on Wednesday (1/7/2020).

Pompeo warned that failure to extend the embargo would allow Iran to increase its submarine fleet. He said this could increase threats in international shipping and freedom of navigation.

“If you fail to act, Iran will be free to buy Russian-made fighter jets that can reach a radius of 3,000 kilometers, placing cities such as Riyadh, New Delhi, Rome and Warsaw in Iran’s sights. Ran will also be able to buy new technology for proxies in “Middle East, like Hamas, Hezbollah and Houthi militias,” he said.

He added that Iran would hold the Damocles sword over the stability of the Middle East economy, endangering countries such as Russia and China which rely on the energy sector in their economy.
