Lufthansa » The Lufthansa airline group, saved from bankruptcy by the German state, announced yesterday that it had unilaterally broken off negotiations with the Verdi union on savings measures linked to the Covid-19 pandemic for ground staff. Verdi described this decision taken after 20 meetings without result of “slap in the face for the employees”, according to its vice-president, Christine Behle, quoted in a press release.

A Lufthansa spokeswoman said union representatives were now called to return to the negotiating table with new proposals for significant reductions in personnel costs. According to the group, the some 600 million euros in savings offered so far by the union will not be enough to overcome the unprecedented crisis the company is going through. Lufthansa is demanding savings of up to 20% of personnel costs from different categories of employees, which, according to the spokesperson, represents in the worst case an 18% reduction in gross salary.

The first European airline group, of which the German state has become the main shareholder in an attempt to get out of the rut, plans to cut 22,000 jobs. ATS
