Faced with the coronavirus, Greta Thunberg encourages the “digital strike” for the climate

Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, instigator of “school climate strikes”, called a “digital strike” Wednesday against the spread of the new coronavirus, arguing the recommendations of health authorities to limit gatherings.

“We cannot solve a crisis without treating it as such and we must unite behind experts and science. This goes of course for all crises,” she wrote on Twitter.

“Experts ask us to avoid large public gatherings” in order to “slow down” the spread of the virus, she continues. “So I personally recommend doing what the experts say.”

The young woman of 17 years, leader of the movement “Fridays For Future” (Fridays for the climate), thus pleaded for a “digital strike” on social networks, a new way to raise public awareness of the climate cause according to her, in order to avoid any physical gathering. She invites activists to post online photos of them with the hashtag #ClimateStrikeOnline (Climate Strike Online) every Friday of the demonstration. At the same time, the Swedish government announced on Wednesday that it would ban gatherings of more than 500 people in the kingdom – which currently has more than 450 cases and one death – thus following the recommendations of the National Public Health Agency.
