Facebook’s parent company takes a step towards the metaverse with its games platform – ICT actualité

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is opening a new virtual reality platform with Horizon Worlds. It thus takes a step towards what is called the metaverse.

Director Mark Zuckerberg wants to transform his social media business into a digital meeting place, where conversations, games and shopping for example seem real thanks to virtual reality headsets. Adults in the United States and Canada can now visit Meta’s Horizon Worlds platform to play virtual reality games.

Horizon Worlds is far from Meta’s futuristic vision for internet development yet. But it already makes it possible to participate in games with friends or to develop a virtual world. Previously, a trial version of the platform had been made available to a select group.

The parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus changed its name to Meta during the fall to underscore its belief in the ‘metaverse’. The internet group had previously announced that it was going to invest significantly more in order to create a digital world that would hardly be distinguished from the real world. This year again, the amount of investments will be around 19 billion dollars (more than 16 billion euros after conversion). But next year, that amount will hover between $ 29 billion and $ 34 billion, causing operating profit to drop $ 10 billion.

Hate messages

Meta’s social media platforms are being singled out, however. In September, a former collaborator asserted that Facebook did not do much about hate messages outside the United States, leading to manifestations of violence. An internal report also reveals that Instagram often imposes a negative image of themselves on teens, without the company reacting. Yesterday KU Leuven announced that the company does not sufficiently identify political announcements. In other words, there are enough ways to develop new products, but not enough to provide sufficient security for existing ones.

Regarding Horizon Worlds, Meta says it has taken several steps to ensure the well-being of users. This is how everyone must respect the behavioral rules in force and users can block others, denounce them or impose silence on them. ‘We want Horizon Worlds to be a safe and respectful environment,’ says the company, which in recent years has consistently held the same language about Facebook.
