Facebook wants to remove special rights for politicians

Apparently Facebook is planning to overturn the controversial regulation, according to which politicians as persons of public interest have so far been excluded from the internal guidelines for content moderation, reports the US technology portal «The Verge».

This measure is a consequence of the recommendation of the independent, Facebook-funded group Oversight Board, the report said. The board had previously confirmed the decision to block the account of the former US President Donald Trump at the beginning of January, but at the same time criticized the special treatment for politicians: So far, they have also been allowed to post articles that contain obvious untruths. It is expected that Facebook will officially comment on the subject this Friday.

Facebook is also supposed to provide insights into its previously largely secret practice, which is used when reviewing controversial posts or the following sanctions. Users should find out if one of their posts violates the Facebook rules or if a ban is imminent.

New practice is likely to have consequences

So far, Facebook has used the credo of assessing the statements of elected politicians as of particular interest. They did not want to censor them as long as they did not convey illegal content or explicitly call for violence, and a corresponding – kept secret – list of people who fall under this special regulation is kept. The abolition of this special rule is therefore seen as a major upheaval that is likely to change the social media communication behavior of many representatives.

There should still be exceptions if politicians make false statements, but these should be publicly identified as such.
