Facebook wants to compete with Zoom and Teams by launching its video calling service

With the ever-increasing use of video conferencing solutions in this time of containment, Facebook also wants its share of the cake and launches its own solution, Messenger Rooms.

The service allows you to find your friends in “virtual rooms”, limited to 50 participants (compared to 40 in the free version of Zoom). If you don’t need to have an account on the social network to join a discussion, creating a room can only be done from Facebook and Messenger. When a public chat room is created, other people can join it spontaneously, like the House Party app.

Facebook is also going to power its solution with AI to enhance video calls. With dynamic backgrounds that adapt to the angle of view of the camera, for example, or with filters that allow you to change the ambient lighting.

According to the company, more than 700 million people call each day via Messenger and WhatsApp, with the number of calls having “more than doubled” since the start of the pandemic. In some cases, the number of group video calls has increased more than tenfold.

Messenger Rooms will be rolled out in select countries and in the coming weeks around the world, including the United States, over the next few days, said Mark Zuckerberg. The app will also soon be available from Instagram, WhatsApp and Portal.
