While Facebook alone is used by around 2.5 billion people a month, WhatsApp recently hit the 2 billion monthly active user mark, reports Statista. As for Messenger and Instagram, they each have at least a billion users per month according to the latest available data aggregated by DataReportal. Tencent, the Chinese company owner of WeChat, Qzone and QQ, is approaching the threshold of three billion users on all of its apps, but the company is still far from equaling the global reach of services managed by Facebook .
This great success is accompanied by the rise in advertising revenues. Facebook posted nearly $ 17 billion in revenue in the second quarter, up 28% from the same period last year. Facebook owes its performance to the strong growth of its mobile advertising revenues which amounted to $ 15.63 billion in the last quarter. The firm headed by Mark Zuckerberg, however, only started selling mobile advertising space in 2012. Seven years later, this activity represents 90% of its revenues.
Despite its worldwide success, the quarterly profit of the most popular social network is down to $ 2.6 billion due to the fine recently imposed by the Federal Trade Commission and a new accounting burden.
