In a statement published on Monday (10/11/2021), the officials said, “America designed smart glasses have design features which mean they can be classified as specialized tools intended to stealth information.”
The decision opens the door to a possible ban not only on its sale, but also its use in Russia.

Facebook describes, “The glasses are an authentic way to take photos and videos, share your adventures, and listen to music or take phone calls, so you can stay present with your friends, family, and the world around you.”
Known as the “Ray-Ban Story,” the glasses allow users to start recording using just verbal commands, and retail for around $400 a pair.
Russia isn’t the only country to mention privacy concerns about products, with Ireland’s Data Protection Commission asking if the LED indicator light mounted on the frame is sufficient to alert unsuspecting people that they are being recorded.
Dublin is home to Facebook’s European headquarters, making Irish regulators a key stakeholder in the US tech giant’s operations.
